No Justice in Queensland
December 18th 2006 05:19
We hear about atrocities in other countries and think how lucky we are to be free and just. Unfortunately, the worst of human nature exists here, too.
On Politics and Culture, Suburban Boy shows a strange paradox in the findings of Queensland court over the death of an Aboriginal man arrested for being drunk and disorderly.
The press release from the Crime Commission shows that no charges are being laid against the officer who arrested the Aboriginal man.
The Coroner's Inquest, on the other hand, finds that the cause of death was that the liver of Mulrunji was nearly split in two from a impact, likely caused by a knee to the ribs.
I've often condemned foreign governments for beating and killing their citizens unfairly, but that this could happen in Australia? Ludicrous.
Are these documents real? Is there another investigation being held? Surely it can't end here.

Thanks for promoting the article on my blog. You ask about the 2 reports mentioned in the second link on my article. I think you may be referring to the two autopsies that were carried out on the dead man which is different to the coronial inquiry which is contained in the first link. Both autopsies are mentioned in the coroners report.
The reason two autopsies were carried out was the family of the dead man requested a second autopsy as they were dissatisfied with the report in the first one. I'm not sure if there are details of both autopsies available but certainly the coroner does go into some detail in her report on both of them.

Regardless of this however is the need for this to be tried in court before a jury iIbelieve so that the people of Palm island are allowed to see that justice is carried out. If Hurley is found innocent in a court of law before a jury I think this would at least allow people to see due process carried out.
There is an old saying that I Ithink is very relevant here. ]Justice should not only been done but it should be seen to be done[/ and I think this is what is needed in this case.
