Australian Plants - The Art of Gardening
May 25th 2006 23:04
When I first came to Australia, I was shocked by the sheer variety of native Australian plants. To grow in this arid and dangerous climate, many of the plants have had to adapt in unique ways to survive.
It's an indication of the originality of the Australian landscape - when the first settlers arrived in Sydney, they thought it would be easy to grow crops, with all the greenery around. They didn't realize that the Australian flora was in a tooth-and-claw fight to survive.
Stanley made a plea to Australians to use more of the native plants in their gardens.
I think it's a good idea. Many of the local councils will give native plants for free to residents, in the hopes that these plants will flourish once again. In addition to looking hot and sexy, native plants are crucial to maintaining the ecosystem in the city. Those adorable little lizards and skinks prefer to live among the plants they've adapted to.
Have you seen those tiny lizards? They're intolerably cute.
Stanley sez:
"Australian natives are important.
You can grow species from other countries as many people do, but I think for many there is a move towards re-instating our sense of place within the Australian landscape by using Asutralian natives from the area to remind us of where we are, and give us a richer sense of place.
Australians in the past have often looked to the the land as somewhat primitive and ugly. But there is a unique beauty in the Asutralian landscape that echoes throughout even the urban centres."
I've had a couple of free plants come my way, and they've all perished horribly. Let's hope someone else can keep the dream alive!
