Douglas Adams on A Literati
February 20th 2007 04:24
A much revered writer from England, Douglas Adams was one helluva weird guy. He wrote a 5-part trilogy (!) called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and never looked back. I have four of the books on my shelf right at this moment.
JoshZ runs A Literati and brings up Douglas Adams in his latest post - though with no funny pictures - and brings up an interesting observation:
Yesssss.... the later books in the series are bleak, almost, considering that we, as a human race, have been essentially wiped out.
I think this was a conscious choice on Adams' part... he loved technology and the environment, and I think he saw self-destruction as the only possible solution for a species so bent on waste and greed.
On the other hand, the main character in his Hitchhiker's books find near true-happiness when he gets a job as a Sandwich maker on a far removed planet, with backwards, tribal inhabitants. From this, I think Adams saw the potential for every human being to be happy, as long as they do what they gotta do...

At least, the first two parts of [the series] are absolutely hilarious. After that, [Adams] tends to get more than a little depressing. [The main character's] life takes repeated turns for the worst, repeatedly, with no justifiable (plot wise) basis. So, the hilarity of the book is undershadowed, constantly, with a sense of hopelessness, or at least, pointlessness.

JoshZ is a New Impressionist.
Or a Young Master.
His reviews have made me buy a few of the books...okay, so maybe I haven't actually got around to reading them all but come on...I will...

Unfortunately, I don't get much time to encourage the all the writers on Orble, but I hope this makes up in some way. With over 1000 blogs, it's an arduous task, really...
