Female Gamers are Here to Stay

November 29th 2006 01:11
She doesn't have her own domain name yet, but Sword Serenity is throwing weight behind the growing number of women who are taking back the video game night - her blog: A Female Gamer.

There's a lot of publicity on the mythos of 'the female gamer'...these days, game companies are struggling to find ways to get women to buy their games, and women are trying their best to stay focused on the game at hand.

The games that successfully draw a female audience, like the Sims, end up selling huge numbers, with expansions and add-ons part of the result avalanche of money.

Why aren't there more female friendly games? Personally, I don't think that we need games especially FOR women... the games that go down this path often cheapen female interests into 'we've added shopping and relationships!'.

Really, gaming culture is male-dominated because, historically, gamers were Comp Sci and Engineering freaks, male-dominated subjects. That's carried through to today, I believe, and the stigma persists.

Give us a really satisfying game to play; men and women alike will be all over it. Hell, I know girls that love Resident Evil, and I can't go near it.

I used to love playing Starcraft in its Hey-Day! Although I was a woos. For all you Starcraft fans I would join:

10MINS NO RUSH games.

Starcraft is still huge, for some reason... it's too old for me to play, though!

There are a surprisingly large number of chicks who play games. Hot ones, too!

Some of my female friends always beat me at Warcraft 3. Also, my sisters used to kick my ass in X-men Mutant Academy, Bloody Roar, and Worms (my God, this was a fun game). I think women just need to coax their inner gamers to come out.

true, I've been beaten hard at Worms before, too!

How can you still talk to that girl like a normal person?

'Oh my WOW boyfriend is so romantic. He gave me an Elven rose yesterday...'

wait... is this story really about you?

LOL - I can remember Sim City etc.
And well before that, Sonic the Hedgehog and the like which I still posess.
The most 'blokey' game I own, again on the old Sega Master System - is Terminator (2 I think).

But who's got time for games, and I'd rather read books anyway. ; )

I think girl gamers are great.

At the moment, my youngest brother is looking for one. Must have good micro and be able to headshot with an AWP. Only serious Halo2 and Guitar Hero2 enthusiasts reply. F1u3/\/cy !/\/ 1337 5p34k /\/07 r3qu!3r3d.

JZ, for some reason the 1337 5p34k is a lot more 'legible' on the Orble font... weird, eh?

Melissa, it's tough to make time for games, and I find that I've got too many 'real' things to do, but what a world, the gaming world!

So this is where the sudden traffic's been coming from!

And that Magespace article you linked to was a very good read. I pretty much agree with everything on there, tips and scenarios.

Related shorts:

- I despise "games for girls"
- I love the Dead or Alive games from 2 onwards (great fighting game, and counters are my style). I laughed too hard at the ridiculous physics in DoA1 to even play the game properly.

SS,

Did you see the trailer for the new DOA? It's out of control, in a horrible, horrible way... they've ramped up the bounciness so that, no matter what the character does, them boobs just jiggle and shimmy all over the place.

It is not cool.

It's my job to help promote new bloggers - it's great you got your own domain name. Now you can work on getting the traffic to your site. I'll send you a message - check your Orble message folder.

No I haven't yet. Are you talking about DOA5 or DOA Extreme 2? So far I've disregarded the Volleyball games since I know it's for eye candy only. I can't really imagine much worse in terms of bounce than DOA1 though... READY? START! ... and before your character even begins moving, their breasts start bouncing.

Also... I missed the second article link the first time I read this post when I commented on the first one. TwitchGuru has a point about the way female characters are designed in some games, but what I found more interesting was the TGD article she was referring to.

The guy writing the article seems to contradict himself a bit, particularly when it comes to attitude. It feels like the article was written by at least 2 people. Some of the article seems reasonable (the final paragraph), but the attitude in the rest of the article of "we don't want women playing our games because they'll wreck them" seems rather egotistical and well, illogical. I really don't see how more women playing games will suddenly change all the other games on the market. Maybe there'll be more different games, but it doesn't mean the current genres/styles will disappear.

Also:

"To engage a woman..."

made me think of:

"To engage the locking mechanism..."

and other object-related references. Ah well, I've ranted on too long, but I can see why the TGD article bothered people. ^^;

http://www.tgdaily.com/2005/08/27/why_women_aren/index.html

It was the first link just after the opening quote in the article "Sex and the Archetypical Female Gamer"

SS, yeah that article sort of went nowhere... he started out by claiming that men like their games savage, but then said some very vague things about how to attract a female audience...
