Sofia's Death - Legal Herald
July 3rd 2006 23:14
Oh, it's a tough, turbulent time in Perth.
Recently, an 8-year-old girl was found beaten, raped and strangled in a busy shopping mall washroom. It's a crime of the direst magnitude, and one that makes us feel collectively ill for being part of this grotesque society. Some part of me thinks we should give up, and go back to wandering naked in the forest.
On Legal Herald, the Legal Brunette poses the obvious question:
Sofia's Death: What punishment is appropriate?
How can we decide? It's not an easy choice.
Well, in fact, it is easy. The need for vengence demands that we kill this man. Torture and kill. But first, he should be raped by big burly men, with spiked penises covered in broken glass.
It's not that easy, unfortunately. While I want this man's life to be exterminated, I am unconditionally against capital punishment. It's too far, it's irreversible.
Once you've killed this monster, the door is open to kill other convicted prisoners. Since we can never know the truth, we can only guess that we're killing a guilty man. The truth is always obscured.
