SydneyTable - Non La

Ed hits Asian cuisine hard today, with his post on Non La, a Vietnamese restaurant in Surry Hills.
I like eating in Surry Hills. I don't know why... maybe it's because my first time eating on Crown street was at this fabulous little Nepalese restaurant that served up a sick chutney.
There's a bit of edge in the air, though. Walking from Central Station into the suburb, there's an abandoned lot on one intersection; the building that used to be there was demolished for some reason, and the absence of the building gives pedestrians an uncensored look into the flat of the adjactent building.
Once, walking from Oxford street down into the 'Hills', an old homeless man was urinating on the street, his little shriveled penis protesting the fresh air and attention. He saw me and yelled some racial slur, on account of my dark skin, I suppose, but I couldn't really understand him through the fog of alcohol and dementia.
Ed doesn't suffer the same treatment... his trip to Surry Hills is one of vibrant flavours and the aromatic charms of southern Vietnamese cuisine. From his post:
"Similarly with the green papaya salad with spicy beef... here the beef is cooked and dried to the extent that it resembles thick jerky; it's chewy saltiness matching perfectly with the crunchiness of the papaya and the same sweet dressing."
Ah, Ed knows how to torment a brutha... beef jerky and papaya? I'd run over broken glass and syringes to get that on my plate.
