The Comic Nerd

January 29th 2007 01:51
It's never been considered 'cool' to be into comics, but I think you could argue that comic book aficionados are in their own Renaissance right now, with all the crappy movie adaptations at the box office, and a resurgence of interest in the 'graphic novel'...

Personally, I'm all for it... I read comics casually when I was a kid, usually borrowing them from richer friends. These days, though, I can't believe how far the medium has come, with painfully emotional works, such as Maus or Barefoot Gen.

On Orble, we've got a new blogger that's got an impressive depth of knowledge about comics: The Comic Nerd.

Self-labelling himself as a 'nerd' may not help his standing with the ladies, but it does give him those self-deprecating credentials that go oh-so-good with a healthy comic book habit.

Some choice posts:

Cyclops: Racist? Cyclops from the X-Men shows that he's got an all-consuming hatred for Middle Eastern people. I hear he's with the Department of Defense now.

Conan vs. Thor
Really, can't a God of Thunder beat a measly barbarian?

Favourite Comic Covers Without covers, comics would just be a bunch of loose pages!

The best thing about The Comic Nerd is that he takes the time to scan several preview pages, offering them for display. A great blog, and one that has unique content on the net!

john, I've never given you the post of the day? Sorry, man, a terrible oversight!

I've tried to avoid linking to popular blogs these days, since they get lots of attention!

I'll throw a little love your way - you've certainly got enough great posts to warrant it!

That's it.

The day someone calls me a nerd to my face is the day they taste my knuckles.

Was that a bit much?
It was wasn't it?
Sorry.

I do like The Comic Nerd blog...but he never answers his female comment leavers...probably thinks we're strange...

It's like so last whenever to associate comics with nerds or vice versa. Come on. Comics are works of art.
Yes I am a comic book lover from childhood. Still collect them. Also collect vintage boots and ballgowns and front teeth....
If that makes me a nerd, so be it.

Um Cibby....seeing you like Rugby and all....If Australia wins RWC, would my little border line blog qualify for Post of the Day then?
It'll probably say something like this.....

"Suck merde y'all....Bill is ours!!!!
And Larkham was magnificent...."

The comic nerd is pretty cool, love the cyclops post, someone was high when he wrote that dialogue.

can I assume my blog is popular?

Alright, i won't post for a few more days until it is no longer popular and worthy of 'attention'...

if it helps I lost 80 readers overnight...

go me

(*note: my not posting for a few days has more to do with the computer being fried than me getting obsessively desperate over something intended on doing the opposite of what will happen to my blog should I stop posting)

DuskDevi, you shoul dunderstand that nerds like me and the comic book guy don't believe the fairer sex exists on the internet, so when you post were more or less going to think you are a figment of our imaginations

Go nerdiness, yeah, call me heartless, I'll have to agree... I left my heart back in Perth (I moved to Melbourne 3/4 years ago)

Aha! My conquest of the world commences!

Thanks for the comments guys! A few clarifications.

1) I am engaged, so I don't need to have standing with the ladies any more. Got one on the hook already!

2) I do not use the term nerd as an insult. It is a mark of pride! A badge of honour, and the scars of hard-fought childhood getting punched for playing Dungeons and Dragons! Viva la Nerd!!! Death to meatheads!

3) Uh... have I actually had any comments from women? The only way I'd notice is if they remark on the awesome sexiness of my avatar picture or something. Rest assured - if I haven't responded to a comment, it's not because you're a dame. It's probably because I don't like you.

Hugs all round,

The Comic Nerd

Dusky, it's a deal. If Australia wins the Cup, there'll be Postage of the Dayage all around.

It kind of makes you a rugby nerd, doesn't it?

I use the word "Sports Geek" or "Footy Geek" to describe fans of rugby, cricket etc...

Heh. After the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen came out, I lost track of how many folk I tried to convince the original graphic novel was not just more intelligent, but more exciting as well. After that crapfest of a movie it was kind of a hard sell.

Cyclops: Racist? Cyclops from the X-Men shows that he's got an all-consuming hatred for Middle Eastern people. I hear he's with the Department of Defense now.

Racist or species-ist? Just, if he gives you the "Look me in the eye and say that!" line, don't fall for it!

DuskDevi posts:

Agreed. Anyone who forsakes an entire medium just because of the lowest common rep it has is missing out on some truly great material.

That's why those used teleports are for sale so cheap.

It'd take more than teleports to get my heart back...

is there a second hand love ray anywhere? I sure could make *good* use of one of those.

For one thing I cna use it on my cat so she stops attacking me sporadically, and the second time round I'll be using it to *get* my bloody heart back, which means I'll be spending a small fortune to go back to perth.

Damn, i'm going to see if they have love rays (or whatever) on eBay.

francis, the League of Extraordinary Gentleman comic book was a brilliant piece of work... I'd say on par with a really great book. Comic, tragic, intense.

And that movie. Oh, that movie. I didn't make it much past Sean Connery shooting the guy in the back from 1000 meters.

Fighting is how cats show affection; when mine play together it's like Championship Wrasslin' except more dignified and without the silly costumes.

It's a good one to play MST3K with.

So my cat loves me and shows it to me by chewing on everything I have? Nice.

Must be cat affection, human affection would be different lest every female is madly in love with me
